An Analysis of Laura Bush’s Editorial using Generic Criticism

Abstract: I evaluated the editorial written by Laura Bush and published by the Washington Post concerning the recent zero-tolerance immigration policy by the Trump administration. Laura Bush spoke out on June 17, 2018, after the recent events where nearly 2,000 children were separated from their families. I used generic application to compare and analyze Laura Bush’s editorial to that of a feminine rhetorical style. Laura Bush created a meaningful editorial that touched people in a beautiful way. Laura Bush was able to write an editorial that met the criteria of the genre of a feminine style by using personal tone, nurturing statements, and empowering others to be kind and nurture their relationships. Laura Bush has a vision of humans treating each other as humans through the use of kindness, compassion, and love.

Key Words: Feminine style, Laura Bush, generic application, family separation policy
