NFL Draft Effects: College Recruiting and On-field Success
Abstract: This paper addresses how the results from and the success in the NFL draft influences a college football team’s recruiting success. We further investigate how that recruiting success translates to on the field success. We employ a large, detailed panel data set covering 17 years of college football play from 2001 through 2017, and follow previous literature by employing a two-stage least squares approach. Our primary contribution is to include a major variable previously omitted from the literature, namely, a team’s player success in the NFL draft. Our results indicate a strong positive relationship between recruiting and on field success. We also find a strong positive relationship between NFL draft success and team recruiting success.
