Designing of Savonius Wind Turbine

Abstract: Savonius wind turbines have scoop-like structures and are a common type of vertical axis wind turbines. They experience less drag while moving against wind flow and more drag while moving in the direction of wind. The drag difference rotates Savonius wind turbines and produce electrical power. Savonius wind turbines can start at a low wind speed without any external force and have simple structures and are easy to maintain. However, the energy conversion efficiency of Savonius wind turbines is relatively low compared with other types of vertical axis wind turbines. In this project, Savonius wind turbines with different overlap ratios, end plates, blade shapes and blade numbers are simulated. The influences from these factors on energy conversion efficiency of Savonius wind turbines are analyzed. Savonius wind turbines are designed based on their geometric parameters to improve the energy conversion efficiency.
